Probably the UK's most popular destination for holiday makers and retirement homes, however get away from the coast and the British influence becomes less noticeable. Many of the smaller towns and villages still maintain a bright and exciting Spanish lifestyle.
Spain is positioned between latitudes 26° and 44° N, and longitudes 19° W and 5° E, and borders Portugal to the West; Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea to the south, France to the East and North East.

The Islands

The islands of Spain are numerous and well known.
The Canary Islands(Islas Canarias), are located in the Atlantic Ocean, off of the northwest coast of mainland Africa. The better known (and larger) tourist resort islands of Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, are mingled with the lesser known islands of La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, Isla de Lobos, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este, La Graciosa, Alegranza, and Roque del Oeste.
Situated in the Mediterranean Sea are the Balearic Islands (Illes Balears), consisting Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera as well as the islets of Cabera,Estells de Fora, L'Imperial, Illa de ses Bledes, Na Redona, Conillera, L'Esponja, Na Plana, Illot Pla, Na Pobra, and Na Foradada (most of which are largely uninhabited, national park).
Less well known Spanish territories 'Plazas de Soberanía' are a collection of small North African city states (enclaves) and islands surrounding Morocco, probable the largest and most notable being Ceuta and Melilla. .

The Regions

Spain is composed of 17 autonomous communities and two autonomous cities. Spain has no official religion but Roman Catholicism has long been the main religion of the country. The main language is Spanish (español or castellano, Castilian) and is spoken all over the country. A number of regional languages have been declared co-official, the most common being Catalan (català) a distinct variant of Catalan, is official in the Valencian Community.
