Visiting The Alcazaba in Malaga

The Moorish citadel or Alcazaba is situated on Gibralfaro hill in the city of Malaga, It was built in the 11th century during the reign of King Badis, typical of Moorish fortresses the structure has a labyrinth of passages and numerous defensive towers. Originally there were three palaces only one of which has survived in its original style with the other two being rebuilt over the years.

One of the rebuilt palaces now holds the city's Archaeological Museum, with collections going back to the prehistoric era, as well as Roman, Visigoth and Moorish exhibits.

Above the Alcazaba and connected to it, is Castillo de Gibralfaro. Unfortunately there is no internal connection for visitors to use when moving between the two sites so you have to walk or take The Tourist bus.

Castillo de Gibralfaro (meaning mountain of the lighthouse) was built on the site of a Phoenician light-house in the 8th century, then rebuilt in the 14th century.
