Alte Church

Alte village clusters around its church and chapel. The parish church Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Assunção built in the 13th century by the wife of the second lord of Alte, to give thanks for his safe return from the eighth crusade to the Holy Land. It has undergone many changes,inside the church are three chapels, the Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Our Lady of the Rosary and St. Francis ,and St. Sebastião (St. Sebastian) , coated with late 16th century Baroque, poly chrome tiles some consider to be the best example of poly chrome tiles made in Seville.

The smaller church the Igreja de S Luis was built at the beginning of the 15th century, The plain interior is known for a series of four paintings depicting the life of St. Louis.

Nearby the sources of the Alte river Fonte Pequena and Fonte Grande have been a local meeting place for years as the source of water for the village, the Fountain da Bicas is decorated with blue and white tiles with the poems of Candido Guerreiro on them.
