Fira capital of the Island of Santorini is perched 260m high on the edge of a cliff with an impressive view of it's small harbour and the rest of the caldera. Fira was established as a settlement during the second half of the 18th century, at this time the Venetian nobles and Catholic community abandoned the Castle of Skaros in Imerovigli, moving to Kasteli of Pyrgos. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Turks invaded capturing the island and moving the capital from Skaros to Fira. After the earthquake of 1956 many of the 18th century buildings in the town were destroyed.

Today Fira is not only the capital but also forms Santorini's cultural and commercial center. Although geared around the tourist industry, Fira is still worth visiting. There is an abundance of museums, galleries and cultural events, along with a substantial number of hotels, taverns, cafes, restaurants, clubs and bars. Fira is by far the best place to shop for souvenirs and gifts although its small winding streets get exceedingly crowded when cruise ships drop off their passengers.

Most public transport buses and taxis operate from Fira, which has a small bus station. Buses are fairly reliable although can get crowded especially in the peak holiday season.
