Santorini( also known as Thera) is part of the Cyclades islands, found in the middle of the Southern Aegean Sea, along with Mykonos and Crete, they form some of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece.
Santorini, Strongili and Kalisti, are part of one of the worlds largest, mostly submerged volcanic caldera. The site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the world. the island is also linked with the leagend of Atlantis
Santorini takes its name from St Irene of Thessaloniki who is said to have died in excile on the island in 304AD, and many of the churches and chappels are dedicate to this saint.
The western side of the island has step cliffs with amazing views from the villages of Fira and Oia perched on the cliff-tops, well known for their spectacular sunsets these villages are very popular with criuse liners and day trips. The beaches are found mostly on the Eastern side of the island have corse black and red sands.
