Church of Panagia

The Byzantine Church of Virgin Mary the Panagia is found in the center of the village, built in the 14th century, it is easily seen from one of the rooftop restaurants, but the small entrance can easily be missed in the crowded streets.
Surrounded by high walls, the church has a small gated courtyard, it is two or three minutes walk from the main square, on the left hand side as you travel toward the Acropolis, look for the bell tower, it can be seen amongst the gaps in the buildings .

Church of Panagia is cross shaped with a large octagonal central dome. The simple white-washed external walls and domed, red tile roof, are at odds with the highly decorative interior.
The floor of the interior is decorated with a pebble mosaic (hohlaki), complimented by a spectacularly carved wooden screen wall of icons and religious paintings, a Bishop’s throne and hanging from above, a large bronze layered candle chandelier.
The quality of the 19th century wall frescoes, depicting biblical scenes is very good with even more covering the barrel-vaulted roof and the dome. Over the doorway, as you leave is a huge fresco of The Last Judgment, depicting twisting bodies writhing together in the flames of hell.

When visiting ladies must remember to cover both head and legs. Entrance is free but there is a small charge to visit the museum, you may not realize that you are only paying for this (and you don't have to visit it.) as the ladies on the entrance "don't speaker the English" and are a little unclear about what they are charging you for.
