Almost on the Spanish border Perpignan is very Catalan in character, but French in attitude with a mix of Catalan, Romany and North African cultures, Perpignan is officially presented as “Perpignan la Catalane”.

Perpignan lies at the center of the Rousillon, around an agricultural plain. It is bordered to the south by the Mediterranean sea the French Pyrenees on the other. Known as the “Land of Light”, Perpignan benefits from over 300 days of sunshine a year.

The Roman Catholic 'Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist of Perpignan', (Cathédrale de Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Perpignan), is located on Rue de l'Horlogein, is just a short walk from the Tourist office a cathedral, and a national monument of France, located in the town of Perpignan in Languedoc-Roussillon. The cathedral was begun in 1324 by King Sancho of Majorca, and later finished in the 15th century. It replaced the Cathedral of Elna, and therefore the church was at first the seat of the Bishop of Elne, and then, from 1602, of the Bishop of Perpignan.
