Forteresse de Salses

Salses-le-Château (Salses) is in northern Roussillon an area of the Pyrénées-Orientale. Located on the coast 15Km north of the city of Perpignan the small village of Salses-le-Château, ( originally part of Spain ) was conquered by France in 1642. Forteresse de Salses was originally built by the Spanish between 1497 and 1504 to protect the northern province of Roussillonis. Situated within easy walking distance slightly north of Salses-le-Château the village is separated from the fortress by a railway line.

Forteresse de Salses is built in a rectangular shape (115m X 90m) and has various buildings on different levels that are linked by corridors and walkways. A cylindrical tower is located at each corner. A large courtyard is surrounded on three sides by stables, above which are three-storey barracks that could accommodate up to 1,500 men. All the buildings have a flat roofs,

A tour takes around 45minutes but apart from the peak season is only presented in French, although the tour guides do make an effort to keep non french speakers informed as much as possible.
