Berry Pomeroy castle

Berry Pomeroy castle is situated on an isolated wooded hill, close to the River Dart near Totnes southern Devon.
The remains of the castle and mansion (ruin) is reached by a fairly long, single track road a little NE of the village of Berry Pomeroy, the property is now part of English Heritage, and apart from a small cafe there are few other facilities available. There is no shelter so ensure the weather is to your liking.

It is thought that the first castle was built during the early 12th century the precise date of when construction was started is not recorded, the current outer walls and the port cullice were added at a later date.
In 1547 the castle was acquired by the Seymour family (Henry VIII, King of England married Jane Seymour) and the castle itself was replaced by the great Elizabethan mansion of the Seymours the ruins of which are left standing, only the outer walls of the Pomeroy castle remain.
The mansion was intended to become the most spectacular house in Devon, but was never fully completed, finally being abandoned in the 1700s.
